Description

This is a large, three-storey terrace house located on the seafront at 18 Downs Road, Newcastle, County Down, dating to approximately 1900. It stands at the eastern end of a terrace. The symmetrical front facade features double timber-panelled doors at ground floor, topped by a fanlight with a shallow segmental arch and a label moulding. A small first-floor balcony with decorative cast iron balustrading supported by two narrow cast iron columns is positioned above the doorway. A hipped roof porch spans across part of the front, incorporating canted outer bays. Each floor of the bays has windows to each face, with slightly splayed reveals, shallow segmental arch cill courses, and label mouldings. A doorway, similar to the ground floor entrance, with glazed upper panels, is located between the bays at first floor level. A window sits between the bays at second floor level. All windows are sash frames. The front is finished with lined render, prominently channelled at the outer edges and painted, with a yellow brick eaves course. The south-facing gable is finished in lined render and painted.

The rear facade is dominated by a large, two-and-a-half storey gabled return. On the north face of this return, there is a ground floor window and one to the first floor, both with sash frames. The south face has two ground floor windows, and two first-floor windows, with one sash frame, while the others have modern insertions with modern frames. A large single-storey lean-to extension with modern windows, a Velux window, and a glazed door adjoins the rear. Above this lean-to, at first floor level, are two sash windows, one considerably larger than the other. A further sash window with a semicircular arched head is situated in the upper level of the gable. Exposed sections of the main rear facade have windows to each floor. The rear is finished in plain render and unpainted. The roof is covered in natural slate with hounds tooth red clay ridge tiles, with a cast iron skylight to the rear. The roof contains two yellow brick chimney stacks. Non-natural slates cover the lean-to roof. A mixture of cast iron and PVC rainwater goods are present. The building was constructed around 1900.
