Description
This is a large, two-story seafront terrace house dating from approximately 1890 to 1900, situated on the eastern side of Downs Road in Newcastle. The front facade is symmetrical, with a central timber-panelled entrance door topped by a fanlight within a shallow segmental arch. Flanking the doorway are full-height, hipped roof canted bays, each featuring sash windows with segmental arch heads and splayed, flush cills on both floors. Narrow moulded pilasters define the piers of these bays. A panelled and glazed door with a segmental arch fanlight sits between the bays at first-floor level. A modern decorative balcony, supported on original thin cast iron columns, extends across the facade at the first floor, accessible via a first-floor doorway between the bays, which mirrors the design of the ground floor entrance. The front facade is finished with lined render and painted.
A recently added gabled porch/small conservatory with modern glazing is located at the rear of the property on the left side. To the right, on the main rear facade, is a narrow window with a modern frame, and two further windows above it, also with modern frames. A fairly large, two-story gabled return features a large modern window on its north face at ground floor, with a four-over-four sash window directly above. A similar sash window is present on the first floor of the gable. A single-story kitchen section with a mono-pitched roof extends from the ground floor of the gable. The rear facade and the return are rendered but unpainted.
The roof is covered in natural slate with three Velux windows to both the front and rear, and has a slight overhang at the rear. Two rendered chimney stacks are present; the stack to the south has been heightened due to the construction of the taller No. 20, while a rendered stack is visible on the return gable. The property incorporates metal and PVC window and rainwater goods. Steps lead to the entrance, and a low rendered wall fronts the property. This house was likely built around the same time as the neighboring property at No. 24.
