Description

This is a large, three-storey terrace house built around 1900, situated on the eastern side of Downs Road, Newcastle. The front facade presents a symmetrical design, but has been altered with a large, modern, fully glazed porch/conservatory spanning the ground floor, and a glazed door screen within. The porch roof also incorporates a small first-floor balcony featuring decorative cast iron balustrading. The house has prominent, hipped roof, canted outer bays to each side, each with windows to every face, displaying slightly splayed reveals, shallow segmental arch heads, a cill course, and a label moulding. A larger, similar window, likely formerly a doorway, sits between the bays at first floor level, with a smaller window positioned between them at the second floor. All windows, including those at the rear, have modern PVC frames. The front facade is finished with lined render and painted, with a yellow brick eaves course.

The rear is dominated by a large, full-height, four-level gabled return. This features a variety of windows spaced across the ground, first, second, and third floors, differing slightly in size. The south-facing side of the return has two windows on the first and second floors, and one on the third. The north-facing side has a single window on each of the ground, first, second, and third floors. A smaller lean-to section with modern windows, a Velux window, and a glazed door adjoins the ground floor of the return gable, which is largely blank otherwise, with a single window at ground level. The sections of the main rear facade at the extreme left and right each have a window on every floor. The rear is finished in plain, unpainted render. The roof is covered in natural slate with distinctive hounds tooth red clay ridge tiles. Two chimney stacks are present: a rendered stack built on top of the original stack of number 22, and a yellow brick stack. A rendered stack is also visible on the return gable.

The house was constructed around 1900 by the father of Mrs. Gunn, who lived in the property until the 1930s. During the Second World War, it served as a mess for US army officers, before being sold to the Sawey family. It operated as a guest house from 1964 and has been owned by the current owner since 1972.
