97 Main Street, Newcastle, Co. Down, BT33 OAE

The building at 97 Main Street, Newcastle, is a two-and-a-half storey terraced shop dating to approximately 1910-1920. Originally, it was a butcher's shop with a decoratively tiled interior, but this has since been removed.

The property is located on the west side of Main Street and has been significantly altered and amalgamated with the adjacent buildings at numbers 99 and 101. The front now features a large, modern shop front spanning the width of all three properties. The first floor retains two window openings, and the building has a large gabled attic half dormer with a semicircular headed window above, featuring moulding. The windows are now in modern frames. Plain barges and a finial adorn the overhang of the attic dormer. Number 99 has an additional window on the first floor, while the front of number 101 is completely modern. Modern extensions have significantly enlarged the rear of the entire block.

The former interior, which once featured decorative tiling indicative of its use as a butcher’s shop, is no longer present. The butcher’s shop closed sometime ago, and the building subsequently housed a clothes shop before becoming a furniture and flooring shop.
