Description
The site, located on the west side of Main Street in Newcastle, County Down, formerly contained a single-storey house of possible pre-1834 origin. This building was demolished around 1990 and replaced by a larger, modern building containing shops and apartments, with an apparent return. The house was first surveyed around 1978, appearing as a long, single (or possibly one-and-a-half) storey structure with a gabled roof. Its symmetrical facade featured three sash windows, each with a label moulding above, flanking a small, gabled porch. The roof was covered in natural slates and decorated with late Victorian-style ridge tiles, and included four evenly spaced, rendered chimney stacks topped with octagonal pots. The south gable also had two windows, and both the front facade and gable were rendered and painted.
The Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1858 show a building matching the plan and location of the house that stood until recently. Valuation records from 1834 indicate the property was then occupied by Eliza Douglas and was graded 'B', suggesting it was considered relatively old, perhaps thirty to fifty years old. It was among approximately 110 single-storey properties, some described as ‘very good’, noted in the 1836 Ordnance Survey memoirs. By 1863, the property was in the hands of the Reverend James Steen. The regular facade, gabled porch, label moulding, and decorative ridge tiles suggest that if the original house was indeed pre-1834, it underwent renovation in the late Victorian period. The building was demolished around 1990. The currently visible building is two storeys with a hipped roof.
