Description
This is an open pavilion shelter, likely dating from the mid to late 1950s. It was located on the Central Promenade in Ballaghbeg, near Newcastle, County Down. The shelter was oblong in plan and featured a flat, oversailing roof of modern design. Constructed primarily in reinforced concrete, it was rough-rendered and painted, with a fluted string course positioned just below roof level. A continuous cantilevered bench extended across the entire façade. A large flat arch opening faced north, while a long band of timber-framed windows was situated to the south. The shelter was used as a pavilion. While Down District Council’s records prior to 1970 were destroyed, Mr. Sampson, Chief Architect of DDC circa. 1960-70, confirmed that Munce and Kennedy had previously carried out most of the Council's work; the firm later became Consarc, but their historic archives from that period were unavailable. It was noted that the building was demolished before listing was completed in 2005. Accounts suggest a construction date between 1840 and 1859; however, this date is likely erroneous.
