Description
This is a small, plain, single-storey gabled school house built in 1904 and now used as a church hall. It is situated on the west side of Bryansford Road, just south of Newcastle town centre.
The front (east) façade is symmetrical, featuring a large gabled porch with a recessed timber-sheeted double door and fanlight. Small six-pane windows flank the porch on both sides. The porch roof has an overhang. To the left of the porch are two larger multi-pane windows, and to the right are two similar windows. The south gable is blank, while the north gable has two windows matching those on the front. The rear façade was not visible, but the building may be linked at this side to a larger modern hall.
The façade is finished with lined render, incorporating a string course and in/out quoins to the porch. The gables feature some mock half-timbering to the apex. The roof is covered in natural slate, with an overhanging edge displaying exposed rafter ends and plain barges. Cast iron rainwater goods are present, alongside a traditional signboard to the porch front. A rubble wall runs alongside the roadside.
This former Church of Ireland parochial school house was built in 1904 at a cost of approximately £1,100. It replaced a previous school on the same site, which had existed since the 1830s. A teacher’s residence was also constructed to the rear of the school. The school was closed in 1962 and subsequently taken over by St John’s church for use as a parish hall. A new hall was erected to the rear in 1969, on the site of the former teacher’s residence. Both the new and old halls continue in parish use.
