Description

Single storey/two-bay vernacular dwelling set apart from main complex and facing S. Currently under renovation and having single bay extension added to left gable. Pitched natural slate roof laid in diminishing courses with blue clay ridge and raised verges; the right hand (lower) is tiled and the upper one at junction with extension is concrete. Two whitewashed chimneys: the one on the gable is masonry, but the cross wall stack is modern and rendered. Eaves have a deep corbel; half round metal rainwater goods. Walls are harled and whitewashed. The extension is rendered. Main elevation faces south. The main entrance is in the right bay, and is a painted t+g half door with granite stools and threshold. There are three 2/2 sash exposed windows with: one to left, one to right of door, and a third in the extension, at left. The left gable of the exterior, is harled and has a 1/1 sash right of centre. At rear, there are three openings: a 2/2 sash to left bay, a single pane casement right of middle, and a 1/1 sash in the extension at right. The right gable is blank but there is a cut granite gate pier made from a single stone set against it. At the rear are two similar byres, one immediately behind the dwelling and the other opening on to the lane. These are drystone built of squared and snecked granite rubble brought to courses. The skews are raised in stone. The roof is painted corrugated metal. Doors are t+g sheeted. Floors are cobbled. Other openings are small and have no frames. Setting: This is a prominent site overlooking the Kilkeel River. It is delineated by dry boulder granite walls, partly original, part rebuilt and part new. The few perimeter trees are of importance to the character of the site. Carriageways are paved in quarry dust/crushed shalestone and edged with granite kerbstones. Walkways are granite setts and the remaining open space is grass with small beds of flowers. There are a number of gates. Some are old, but those on the vehicular entrances are newly made to traditional designs. Each house has a specially designed cast metal plaque as part of the refurbishment.
