Description
This is a two-story house likely dating from between 1860 and 1879, situated within the Mourne Grange complex in Drumindoney, Kilkeel. The house has a hipped roof covered in natural slate, with wet-dashed walls and paired windows. It is set within mature grounds and approached via attractive dome-coped granite gate piers on Newry Road. While it may have undergone alterations similar to other buildings within the Mourne Grange complex (referenced as HB16/05/014A and 014B), it currently does not possess features of special significance and is not a designated listed building. Access for surveying has not been granted.
In 1900, Allen Carey, who was tutor to the Kilmorey children, took over the lease of the house and established Mourne Grange Preparatory School, apparently the first such school in Ireland. It is believed this house served as the headmaster’s residence. The school operated until 1971 and subsequently became Mourne Grange Village Community. The property is owned by a charity.
