Description

Minniebrook is a two-storey house built between 1760 and 1779, originally an example of vernacular Georgian classical style. The building is now in a state of almost complete dereliction and is missing its roof covering, which was formerly natural slates. It has rendered walls and a hipped roof. The symmetrical front elevation features a central rectangular timber ledged door topped by a plain four-paned fanlight, with a semi-circular headed window above. Flanking the door are tripartite windows on each floor, all of which have lost their glazing. The building stands in a rural setting, surrounded by trees and situated in a field, set back from the main road. A modern house was built directly in front of Minniebrook in 1989. The house appeared on Ordnance Survey maps of 1831, initially unnamed, then as "Manybrook" in 1858, and finally as "Minniebrook" by 1902. It is believed to have served as the manse for the Presbyterian minister, Rev J. Bankhead, who was ordained in August 1762 or 1763. The building’s current use is as outbuildings, and it is located in the townland of South West Ballycarry.
