Description

This lime kiln is an example of a historically common structure, though it is now derelict. Constructed between 1840 and 1859, it is located on a slight hill behind a farm, beyond Largy Road, in the townland of Highlandtown, near Carnlough, Ballymena, County Antrim. The kiln is built of limestone and basalt rubble and has a square plan. It features two tiers of recessed segmental arches with limestone voussoirs, and a draw hole is visible on the front face. The charging hole at the top is overgrown and fenced off. The kiln is hidden from the main road by surrounding trees. It was built for the small-scale burning of white limestone, reducing it to a rough powder for various uses. The structure appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1857. It is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest, with its former and current use being recorded as rural industry.
