Description

This is a lime kiln, likely built between 1820 and 1839. It represents a common type of structure once widely used, although many are now derelict or incomplete, as is the case here. The kiln is constructed from limestone and basalt rubble, built into a hillside with a square plan. The front features three tiers of recessed segmental arches made of limestone, containing the draw hole through which processed lime was extracted. A circular charging hole is located on the top, now overgrown and with access blocked. A breach in the south side of the chamber has resulted in some stonework being missing. The kiln sits on an elevated site within a field, positioned behind a farm and visible from the nearby road. It was used for the small-scale burning of white limestone, reducing it to a rough powder for various purposes. The kiln is recorded on an Ordnance Survey map from 1832. The site is of industrial archaeological interest, and remains in private ownership, currently used for rural industry.
