Description

This is an early Victorian single-arched bridge situated on Garron Road, Carnlough, Ballymena, County Antrim. Likely dating between approximately 1842 and 1859, it appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1857 and was probably constructed during the development of the coast road from Glenarm to Cushendall. The bridge was designed by the County Surveyor, Charles Lanyon.

The bridge is constructed of squared basalt rubble set in irregular courses, with dressed sandstone voussoirs forming the segmental arch. Dressed sandstone is also used for the copings and platband; the feather-edged copings are canted upwards at the extremities and let into the parapet at intervals. The abuts are broken forward to form slightly battered buttresses. The vault is of squared limestone, and the carriageway is flat. An incised mason's mark is visible on the inner face of the western parapet, near the north end.

The bridge stands in a rural coastal location, with a rocky foreshore on one side and steep, wooded banks on the other. It remains in an unaltered condition and within an unspoiled setting. The bridge has significance for its style, proportions, industrial archaeological interest, and the authorship of Charles Lanyon, as well as local interest.
