Description

Drumnasole School is a two-storey, five-bay building dating to 1820. Initially built at a cost of £1000 by Francis Turnly of Drumnasole House, it was privately funded until 1833 when it came under the management of the National Board of Education. The building is characterised by roughcast walls with rendered dressings and originally had a slated roof hidden behind a parapet. The side elevations were slate-hung. Its windows were double-hung with full glazing bars, and it featured a large semi-circular fanlight with looped glazing bars above the entrance. Now roofless and windowless, with most of the slate-hanging gone, the building remains in a state of complete dereliction.

A roofless porch, supported by sandstone Tuscan columns, stands before the entrance. The porch is surmounted by a blind oculus at first-floor level and topped by a square pediment decorated with an elliptical oculus. A lean-to extension and a tall stone chimney are located at the rear.

The building was described in 1970 as being in poor condition, noting the absence of its original belfry cupola but intact windows, a condition that has since deteriorated further. Records indicate that the school was a monument and was delisted on 28 June 2002.
