Description
This lime kiln, built of basalt and limestone, is a prominent example of a structure once common in the area. It is set into the hillside behind 114 Largy Road, Carnlough, Ballymena, within the townland of Lemnalary, County Antrim. The structure is on a square plan with a circular charging hole on top, lined with basalt rubble and boulders. A draw hole is located at the bottom of the front face, set within two orders of segmental arches constructed from dressed limestone voussoirs; the inner arch is recessed. The charging hole is partly filled and the draw hole is now blocked. The kiln appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1857. It was built for the small-scale burning of white limestone, or "chalk”, to produce a rough powder for various uses. While the precise date of construction is unknown, it’s estimated to be between 1840 and 1859. The kiln is readily visible from Largy Road and possesses industrial archaeological interest. It is currently in a derelict state and retains its former use as a rural industry.
