Lime Kilns, Waterfall Road, Carnlough, Ballymena, Co Antrim

The site at Waterfall Road, Carnlough, was formerly the location of lime kilns built between 1840 and 1859 by the Marchioness of Londonderry. These kilns were constructed of white limestone and contained several kilns within semi-circular arched openings, arranged in receding tiers. Two tapering brick flues originally served the kilns; by 1970 one had been demolished, followed by another by 1980. The remainder of the structure was cleared away by 1989. The kilns were designed for commercial lime crushing and burning, but were only in use for a short period before being superseded by a different process. The structure included cylindrical uprights built of white limestone with some blackstone and brick. The site is now vacant, and the kilns were delisted on February 8th, 1990. The remains of the kilns represent a notable example of industrial archaeology.
