Description

This is a small, plain, two-story rendered house located within the Glenarm Castle estate, specifically on the north side of the walled garden to the northwest of the castle itself. Dating to around 1875, it originally served as the residence for the Glenarm estate gardener and is typical of late Victorian architecture. The house is a gabled building with a large rear return, built against the north wall of the walled garden. The east front features a simple timber door with a fanlight above, flanked by two evenly spaced 2/2 sash windows on each floor. The north gable is blank, while the south gable is built into the walled garden's north wall, incorporating a ground-floor window, with two narrow, segmental-headed windows above. The rear of the property is largely hidden by a high yard wall, and a two-story gabled return is visible to the left (north) side of the rear elevation. This return appears to have two windows on its south face. The house is generally finished with plain painted render, a slated gabled roof, and two rendered chimneystacks. Metal rainwater goods are present.

Historical records indicate that a building existed on this site as early as 1832, initially a three-sectioned greenhouse. By 1858, a long, continuous structure was in place. The gardener's house itself is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map from 1903, likely constructed around 1875 following a fire that destroyed the stable yard and estate workers' dwellings. The greenhouse underwent major rebuilding in the 1990s. The house possesses architectural interest due to its style and proportions, although later alterations detract somewhat from its original character. Its setting within the Glenarm Castle estate contributes to its group value. The property is privately owned and lies within a conservation area, and was formerly part of listed building HB06/02/001C.
