Description

Lothian Cottage is a two-storey house built around 1870, situated prominently at the west side of Glenarm village on a rise at the convergence of the Straidkilly Road and The Cloney. The building was possibly constructed as a gate lodge for the northern entrance to the nearby Glenarm Castle estate. Its name references the family ties between the then Earl of Antrim and the Marquis of Lothian. From around 1900 onwards, the property has served as the residence of the local Roman Catholic priest.

The house is slightly picturesque in character, with a front elevation facing east that is asymmetrical in composition. The most prominent feature is a large projecting two-storey gabled bay to the left of the entrance. A gabled single-storey porch occupies the centre of the east face, containing a sheeted timber door with decorative strap hinges set within a Tudor arched opening with in-out rendered dressings. The north face of the porch has a small segmental arch-headed window with a fixed two-pane frame.

The large gabled bay to the left of the porch displays a window with modern frame and drip moulding with label stops to the ground floor, and a smaller plain sash window to the first floor without label moulding. To the right of the porch is a window with modern frame and mouldings. Directly above this is a plain rendered shield panel.

The north elevation features a wide modern window to the ground floor at its centre, with a much smaller plain sash window above on the first floor. To the right and slightly recessed is the north face of a two-storey flat-roofed extension with a sash window to the ground floor displaying vertical glazing bars in a 2/2 arrangement.

The south elevation contains a plain sash window with label moulding to the left, and a slightly narrower window to the right also with label moulding but with a modern frame. Above each window is a plain rendered shield.

The rear (west) elevation is complex in composition. The ground floor on the left side includes the rear of the flat-roofed return, with the first floor above containing two windows with modern frames. To the right of this section is a plain sash window to the ground floor and a smaller window with modern frame to the first floor. Further right is a large projecting two-storey gabled bay. At its centre is a single-storey gabled return with a plain sash window to the first floor. The north face of this return has two small windows with modern frames to the right and a timber sheeted door to the left. The west gable and south face of the return are blank.

The façade is largely finished in recent-looking dry dash render with rendered in-out quoins. A large portion of the rear elevation is in plain unpainted render. The gabled roof is slated with an overhang, plain eaves and verges, and PVC barge boards and soffits. Two rendered chimneystacks occupy the centre point of each ridge. The building is equipped with PVC and cast iron rainwater goods.

The house has been considerably altered in recent years, with the application of dry dash render and the introduction of many modern window frames, replacing original fenestration. The building sits within a conservation area.
