Description
The former Bull's House, located within Glenarm Demesne just south of Straidkilly Road, is a gabled, one-and-a-half-story byre dating to around 1870. It is now used as a veterinary surgery and possesses group value. The building was not depicted on an Ordnance Survey map from 1858 but appears in a photograph dated approximately 1872, suggesting construction around 1870.
The symmetrical east-facing front elevation features a central plain timber door with a drip moulding and label stops above. Flanking the door are two evenly spaced sets of paired four-pane sash windows, each with a drip moulding. A central gabled half dormer with a sheeted timber “loft” door sits centrally along the eaves, featuring decorative bargeboards, a drip moulding, and a timber finial. The south elevation has a plain timber door to the right and a small ventilation opening, along with two upper gable openings. The north elevation is largely blank, with ventilation openings similar to those on the south elevation. The rear elevation has four irregularly spaced four-pane windows. The walls are finished with a “salt & pepper” dry dash render, incorporating moulded and chamfered in-and-out quoins, and a smooth rendered base. The gabled roof is slated, with cast iron rainwater goods. Decorative bargeboards and a timber finial adorn both gable ends. The building has architectural interest due to its style, proportions, ornamentation, and setting. It holds local historical interest, is located within a conservation area, and previously recorded as HB06/02/093.
