Description
This stone memorial, originally a drinking fountain, was erected in 1911 to commemorate the former Rector of the Church of Ireland parishes of Tickmacreevan and Templeoughter, Rev. Shelton Francis Dudley-Janns. The structure is situated at the junction of the Straidkilly Road and The Cloney Road, built into a wall.
The memorial is constructed of grey fieldstone and features a pointed arch recess with bevelled and moulded in-and-out dressings. Within the recess is a raised stone panel bearing a decorative monogram ('DJ') above, and the inscription: 'In memory of Rev. Chancellor Dudley-Janns B.D. R.C., for over 35 years Rector of the parish. Died 13th February 1908'. A semicircular plinth extends at the base of the recess, having previously supported the drinking fountain, and now sits on the footpath. The recess is contained within a short section of squared, rock-faced stone walling, which rises to a small pediment with stone coping on the top and outer ends of the wall.
The memorial plaque was originally located within the churchyard, but was later incorporated into this structure when the fountain elements were removed, likely around 1960. Rev. Dudley-Janns, born in Roscrea, Co Tipperary in 1844, adopted the surname Janns in 1874 following a relative’s will. He served as Rector of Glenarm from 1868 and was made Chancellor of Connor Cathedral in 1900. The memorial and drinking fountain were erected to celebrate his work with the Glenarm congregation and the respect he held among the local community.
