Description

The Clifton Memorial Fountain stands between Station Square and Ballam Road, Lytham. Constructed around 1882, it originally stood in front of the Market House in Market Square before being relocated to its present site in the 1920s to accommodate a war memorial. The fountain commemorates John Talbot Clifton of Lytham Hall, who died in 1882. The structure consists of sandstone ashlar supporting a sandstone and timber shelter with a red tiled pyramidal roof.

The drinking fountain itself is roughly square, approximately one metre wide and two and a half metres high. It has a rock-faced pedestal supporting a large, moulded vessel with four oval drinking bowls. A square superstructure sits above, featuring a round-headed niche on each side, adorned with carved dolphins, a foliated frieze, and cresting carved with the Clifton arms and motto "MORTEM AUT TRIUMPHUM."

The square shelter is supported by sandstone pedestals at each corner, which carry three wooden pillars carved with sunflowers. A wooden frieze runs along all four sides, inscribed with: “ELEANOR CECILY CLIFTON ERECTED THIS FOUNTAIN / IN MEMORY OF HER HUSBAND JOHN TALBOT CLIFTON / WHO DIED AT HAMMAN RHEA ALGIERS APRIL 16th 1882 / T, IS WELL, T, IS SOMETHING, WE MAY STAND WHERE HE IN ENGLISH EARTH IS LAID”. A full-width horse trough with a segmentally bowed front is attached to the west side of the shelter and stands directly on the ground.
