Description
Glenarm Bridge is a triple-span stone bridge built in 1823 to designs by engineer David Logan, at a cost of approximately £600. It carries traffic over the Glenarm River and stands adjacent to the west side of Glenarm Harbour in Glenarm, County Antrim.
The bridge features three segmental-headed arches with voussoirs, supported on two cut waters and the outer edges of the ramps. The voussoirs are smooth dressed sandstone, while the main walling is finished in rock-faced stone. The north and south faces are identical. Ramped approaches lead to the bridge: the eastern approach has battered rock-faced side walls and simple iron railings; the western approach is shorter.
The bridge was constructed to replace an earlier bridge known as the Barbican Bridge to the south, and was positioned to direct traffic away from the eastern wall of the Glenarm Castle estate. In 1921, the bridge was widened to accommodate increased motor vehicle traffic. Paired cantilever brackets extending approximately 2 metres on each side were added to support a new concrete deck. Panelled concrete guardrails protect the edges. The western approach was subsequently strengthened with shuttered concrete.
County Antrim Grand Jury Records from 1837 contain a reference to a contract with 'Mr Ritchie' for 'Glenarm Bridge', though this may refer to a different structure such as a viaduct rather than this bridge.
The bridge is located within a conservation area and is of industrial archaeological interest, though it does not meet the criteria for formal listing.
