Description
A cast iron triangular milepost, likely dating from the 1830s. It is situated on the west side of Munie Road, approximately half a mile west of Glenarm. The faces of the milepost are painted with black lettering on a white background. The south face reads ‘Glenarm ½’, the top face reads ‘B Shane 12½’, and the north face reads ‘Ballymena 16’. The post is currently covered in dust.
This milepost is similar in style to others erected along the Antrim Coast Road, many of which remain standing. While the Coast Road was constructed between 1832 and 1842, the road on which this milepost stands is older than that date. Similar mileposts are found elsewhere in the county. The typeface used on the post is consistent with a date in the 1830s. The milepost is of industrial archaeological interest and is considered rare, contributing to its group value.
