Description
The garden within Glenarm Demesne is a rectangular walled garden, established before 1832 and measuring approximately 170 by 85 metres. A smaller vegetable garden is located to the north. The garden is enclosed by a tall, roughly 3-metre high, random rubble wall, and incorporates shrubs, flowerbeds arranged geometrically, and pathways. Pear trees have been trained against the south-facing wall, and a long, single-storey lean-to greenhouse is situated along the north wall.
Within the garden is a two-storey gardener's house, dating from around 1875, and a row of mid-19th century single-storey lean-to stores along with a long lean-to greenhouse, likely dating from the early 1900s. The gardener's house, greenhouse, and stores are listed separately under HB06/02/001C.
A garden is indicated on a map of 1779, with a further garden north of the castle, suggesting an ornamental function. An illustration from possibly the 1780s indicates a more practical use for the latter garden. The present garden is shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832, including a greenhouse and a small vegetable garden to the north. The row of stores appears to have been added between 1832 and 1858, and the gardener's house around 1875. While the current greenhouse form dates from the early 20th century, a greenhouse existed on the site as early as 1833. The garden is located within a conservation area and is in private ownership.
