Description
The building is an Old Presbyterian Church (Non-Subscribing), constructed between 1760 and 1779 and located in the townland of Corkermain, near Carncastle, Larne, County Antrim. It was previously listed but delisted on March 20, 1990.
The church is a rectangular, single-storey building with a gabled roof. The front facade features a gabled and columned porch, which represents a complete remodelling of the original church, leading to the removal of most original features. The exterior walls are rendered with a wet-dash finish, with a smooth cement-rendered plinth. The roof is covered in concrete tiles, with PVC rainwater goods. The windows are rectangular PVC units set within moulded cement surrounds, with concrete cills. The porch has PVC columns in a Tuscan style, a plastered soffit to the canopy, and a rendered gable. The main entrance, facing south-east, has modern double doors with vertical slat glazing and modern handles.
A wall-mounted sundial, inscribed “By Andw [ie Andrew] Snoddy 1779,” is retained on the front wall.
The church stands within its own grounds in a small rural hamlet, facing the road and set back from it with a lawn in front. The front boundary is defined by a low rubble wall topped with a hedge, with a gateway comprised of a pair of large, smooth cement-rendered circular piers containing plain, modern iron gates. The churchyard memorials lack special architectural interest. A previous survey in 1970 described the church as having rendered walls, a slated roof, double-hung windows with coloured glass in segmental-arched openings surmounted by cornices over plain spandrels, double-panelled recessed entrance doors within a similar segmental-arched opening with incised pilasters rising to consoles supporting a cornice, and a plain interior.
The church was remodelled in the 19th century and again in the 1980s. The date of the original construction is uncertain, although the sundial’s inscription indicates 1779, and it was depicted on the first Ordnance Survey map of 1833. The church is currently in use as a church and is owned by a church organisation.
