Ballygalley Bridge, Coast Road, Ballygalley, Larne, Co Antrim

This is an engineered bridge dating to the early to mid-19th century, and it contributes to the setting of the nearby Ballygally Castle. It is a single-arch masonry bridge spanning a stream, constructed from snecked basalt rubble with cut-stone voussoirs forming the semi-circular arch. The arch springs from projecting imposts and is topped by a projecting platband at carriageway level. Buttress piers rise above the parapet copings, capped with weathered stones. The south face of the bridge is largely intact, serving as part of the boundary to the grounds of Ballygally Castle and visible from within those grounds. The north face, overlooking the sea, is partially obscured due to widening and has been altered with concrete parapets and a concrete surround, detracting from its appearance. The bridge is located within the village with an open view towards the sea. It is believed to have been built between 1833 and 1857, as it appears on the 1857 Ordnance Survey map. The bridge is situated within the area of the monument SMR. ANT35:15. It is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest.
