Description

Corkermain House is a two-storey, gabled house constructed between 1800 and 1819. It is located on the Drumnagreagh Road, Carncastle, near Larne, County Antrim, and appears on the first Ordnance Survey map of 1833. The house was originally built by Andrew Crowe, known as ‘Squire Crowe’, and was later sold to Edward Jones Agnew of Kilwaughter.

The building's exterior has been extensively altered with inappropriate materials. The main entrance faces southwest and is symmetrical, with five windows on the first floor and two windows on each side flanking a central, single-storey gabled porch. The roof is covered with Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses, with brick chimneys at each end of the ridge. The walls are rendered with a dry-dash finish, replacing an earlier wet-dash, with smooth cement render to the corners, plinth, and platbands, which lack historical authenticity. The windows are modern replacements, appearing to be PVC fixed lights. The porch roof is slated, featuring a pierced timber barge board and a turned wooden finial, with rendered walls. A modern neo-Georgian style timber door with plain sidelights and a fanlight sits within a rectangular doorway, flanked by modern timber fixed lights with top-hung vents. Modern PVC rainwater goods are also present. The left-hand gable is rendered, with platbands staggered from those on the front elevation. The rear elevation and return are rendered with dry dash and have a range of modern windows with small panes and fixed lights with top-hung vents, including PVC downpipes.

The house stands in a rural setting, set back from the main road at the end of a long driveway, surrounded by agricultural land and offering distant views of the sea. A hard surface extends immediately in front of the house, with a large concrete yard to the rear. Several outbuildings, of no architectural or historical significance, are also located at the rear.

The house was delisted on 28 April 2000.
