Bridge near Millvale, Croft Road, Ballygalley, Larne, Co Antrim

This is a well-preserved example of mid-to-late Victorian engineering, notable for its pleasing design and strong construction. The bridge carries a road over a stream and is built of snecked blackstone rubble with rock-faced cut voussoirs forming a segmental arch. A rock-faced platband runs at carriageway level. The parapets and abutments return square at the ends, and the sandstone copings to the parapets are set into the stone below in three places on each side. These copings have a feather-edged finish and are raised slightly at the ends to accommodate the wider masonry at the returns. The bridge is believed to have been constructed between 1860 and 1879; it is absent from the 1857 Ordnance Survey map but appears on the 1903 edition. It is situated in a rural location on the edge of the hamlet of Ballygally, within a leafy, tree-lined setting. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest and exhibits qualities of style, proportion, ornamentation, plan form, structural system, and setting. It is also of local historical interest.
