Description
This is a water pump situated on the roadside at 272 Comber Road, Dundonald, Belfast. The pump’s original interest has been reduced by the loss of its handle and the accumulation of footway material around its base.
The pump is of a cow tail design with a closed head lever. It features a plain column with spirally decorated detailing, and a fluted cap. The words 'Grainger & Son Comber' are embossed around the top of the column. The pump is set within a walled recess on the east side of the road, positioned outside a row of semi-detached houses that it originally served.
The pump was not depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1919, but it appears on the 1931 edition. According to a local source, it remained operational until the introduction of mains water in 1963. Further information can be found in the Environment Heritage Service report 'Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey' by Fred Hammond, dated January 1997, where it is listed as pump number 43. The structure is of industrial archaeological interest, although it is not listed for its architectural or historical significance.
