Gate Screen at Johnstown House, Magheramore, Magheraveely, Newtownbutler, Co Fermanagh, BT92 6NB

The gate screen at Johnstown House is a wrought-iron structure dating to between 1880 and 1899. It leads to a house that has been significantly altered. The screen comprises a concave dwarf wall, rendered with cement, which supports painted wrought-iron railings. The screen is flanked by octagonal gate piers, each with a shallow pyramidal cap and a moulded base, bearing the makers mark “RIDDEL & CO/ MAKERS/ BELFAST”. The piers support a pair of wrought-iron gates with a box lock. The gates and railings are characterised by spear-headed vertical bars, a central moulded bulb, an additional row of similarly detailed dog bar bars, and a scrolled meeting rail. A cattle grille now prevents the gates from closing fully. The gates are located at the beginning of a driveway leading to Johnstown House; while a road is shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, the gates and screen are not depicted until the 1907 Ordnance Survey map, suggesting a later 19th-century erection date. The screen’s architectural interest lies in its style, proportions, and ornamentation. The setting is also considered a notable feature. The screen previously held the record number HB12/02/101 but was incorrectly described as belonging to "Magheramore House".
