Description

This is an interesting, symmetrical timber house situated in the Newtownbutler area of County Fermanagh, built on an elevated site that forms a visual feature within the landscape. The house, constructed between 1940 and 1959, is aligned north-south on a lane overlooking a road east of the Agharoosky Townland.

The house is a single-storey, three-bay structure built almost entirely of timber. It has a pitched roof covered with artificial slate, with a brick chimney marking the party wall between the central and right bays. The eaves overhang, featuring plain bargeboards and exposed rafter tails. Rainwater goods have been removed. The walls are timber sheeted over a cement-rendered base course. Windows are predominantly 2x3 timber side-hung casements with timber cills and moulded timber architraves.

The principal elevation faces east. A tongue-and-groove (t+g) sheeted entrance door is centrally positioned and is accessed by a stone step, accompanied by 1/1 sidelights and a three-part transom over, all framed by a moulded timber architrave. Windows are present in the left and right bays. The left gable features 1/1 sliding sash windows on either side. The rear elevation is partially obscured by a lean-to extension with a monopitched corrugated metal roof, concrete block walls, and metal-framed windows. This extension wraps around the right gable, incorporating a 3x2 top-hung casement window on its western elevation. The north elevation includes a door opening to the left and a 4x2 top-hung casement window to the right. The east cheek mirrors this detail with a similarly detailed window. The right gable is identical to the left gable. The lean-to extension abuts immediately to the right of the right-hand window.

The house is accessed via a short lane and sits on an elevated site overlooking the road. A small cast-iron gate is supported by two narrow, cement-rendered gate piers with stepped coping. The boundary fence has collapsed. The house was not depicted on the first three editions of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps (up to 1907), suggesting a later construction date.
