Description
This is a well-proportioned, two-storey, three-bay house situated on an exposed hillside in the Aghnachuill townland, Newtownbutler, County Fermanagh. Dating from around 1881, as indicated by the valuation revision book, it retains original fabric and a degree of character. The house is aligned southwest-northeast on a lane to its north. It has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with a cement-rendered brick chimney featuring concrete coping, with the chimney between the bays on the right having been removed. Rainwater goods are absent. All walls are lime-rendered and have slightly advanced eaves. The windows are exposed box 2/2 sliding sashes with horns and stone sills, except where otherwise noted. The principal elevation faces southeast and features a projecting porch with a moulded cement cornice and a flat, cement-coped roof. The porch walls are lined and cement-rendered, with a continuous cement cill course. The southeast face and the left cheek of the house contain margin-paned windows with orange glass margins and blue corner panes decorated with a floral motif. The right cheek features a tongue and groove (t+g) sheeted entrance door with a narrow transom window above. Ground floor windows are present in the left and right bays. Above the ground floor openings are three equally spaced windows, slightly diminished in height. The left gable is blank. The rear elevation is abutted at ground floor level to the central bay and part of the right bay by a lean-to annexe, with a monopitched corrugated metal roof and concrete block walls. The left bay on the rear elevation has two 3/3 metal framed top-hung casement windows; the exposed section of the right bay has a window matching the facade. The first floor rear elevation also has three equally spaced windows of the same design. The northwest face has a 2x2 metal framed top-hung casement window to the left and a narrow 1x3 fixed pane window to the right. The left cheek is blank, while the right cheek has a tongue and groove (t+g) sheeted door. The right gable is abutted by a lean-to outbuilding that appears as a house, featuring a monopitched natural slate roof. The exposed section of this gable is blank. The northeast face of the outbuilding has a 3x2 metal framed casement window to the left and a narrow 1x3 fixed pane window to the right, with a blank left cheek and a tongue and groove (t+g) sheeted door on the right cheek. The house is situated on an exposed site in open farmland, with a farmyard containing several unremarkable outbuildings located to the rear.
