Description

A substantial late 18th century road bridge spans the Ballykelly River at the western entrance to Ballykelly village. The three-arch structure is built of stone and features long parapet walls. It predates the early 19th century redevelopment of the village by the Fishmonger’s Company, possessing local historical and social interest.

The bridge’s central arch has a span of 18 feet, while the two side arches each span 17 feet. The roadway is 32 feet wide, and the parapet walls are 240 feet long, 4 feet high, and 1 and a half feet thick. The river bed beneath the bridge was originally paved. The arches are semicircular, constructed from long, thin whinestones springing from bases now protected by concrete. Stone breakwaters protect the arch springings both upstream and downstream. The bridge walls are of rubble whinstone, and the parapets are made of thin whinestone laid vertically with a slight cant. The stream bed under the arches, and a short distance upstream and downstream, is layered with concrete. On the west side, the parapet wall continues with a slight curve to Bridge House, and this wall is considered part of the bridge structure; gardens were once laid out below this wall when the Cochranes occupied Bridge House.

The bridge was constructed around 1800. It is of industrial archaeological interest and exhibits architectural merit in its style and proportion, as well as a robust structural system and a considered setting. It carries local historical social value. It was delisted on 26 November 1997.
