Description
This is a terrace of four small, two-story houses located on Main Street, Ballykelly, near Limavady, Co. Londonderry. Constructed around 1828, they were designed by Richard Suitor and likely built by James Turnball. The terrace, along with eight brick houses and eight cottages (now demolished), cost approximately £3,000.
The houses are built of coursed sandstone blocks with ashlar facing the street. The front facades are set back from the footway and feature deep, recessed doorways with segmented heads. Above the doorways are segmental-headed windows, each divided into three sliding sash windows, with the central window being wider than the sides. Below the windows, a recessed panel is worked into the stonework. The first floor has a dignified row of square-headed sash windows, creating a regular rhythm. A deep, slightly projecting band of stonework defines the floor level and turns the corner onto the gable. Exposed rafters are visible at the eaves, with a moulded bargeboard providing a positive stop; there is no soffit. The voissoirs of the ground floor segmental arches are well-executed, and the plinth stone has a chamfered top edge. The roofs are covered with large Bangor blue slates, and the chimneys are brick, though of a more recent construction. The lower 900mm of the gable stonework is of rubble whinstone.
The interiors have undergone alterations to accommodate modern living requirements, resulting in reduced floor areas. Two of the properties have large back returns added. The rear elevations are now less regular, with one end house featuring a recent back return, a central house having a wide, flat-roofed dormer, and another end house about to receive a similar addition. Several windows have been altered. A wide back lane separates the terrace from its gardens. Each house includes an attic, with only one retaining an original cast iron skylight. The property was formerly known as Clooney Road.
