Description
This is a terrace of four small, two-story houses located on Main Street, Ballykelly, near Limavady in County Londonderry. The houses were likely designed by Richard Suitor and possibly built by James Turnball around 1828. Originally intended to complement the Presbyterian Church and Churchill, the terrace was designed to a late Georgian style.
The houses are constructed of coursed sandstone blocks with ashlar facing on the front facade. The fronts are closely set back from the footwalk, featuring deep, recessed doorways with segmented heads, and segmental headed windows divided into three sliding sash windows, the central window being twice the width of the side ones. Below the ground-floor windows is a recessed panel in the stonework. At the first floor, a regular rhythm of square-headed sash windows is visible. A slightly projecting band of stonework marks the floor level and turns the corner onto the gable. Exposed rafters are visible at the eaves, with a moulded bargeboard providing a positive stop. The voissoirs of the ground floor segment arches are well-executed, and the plinth stone has a chamfered top edge. The roofs are covered with large Bangor blue slates, and the chimneys are of recent red brick construction. The gable stonework to a height of approximately 900mm is of rubble whinstone.
The interiors have undergone alterations to accommodate modern living standards, resulting in reduced floor areas. The rear elevations are now untidy, with one end house featuring a recent back return, another an intermediate wide, flat-roofed dormer, and the final house undergoing preparation for a similar addition. A back lane separates the terrace from the gardens. Each house contains an attic with a skylight, though only one retains the original cast iron skylight. The terrace originally comprised four houses alongside eight brick houses and eight cottages, of which nothing remains. The cost of construction for the terrace and associated buildings was approximately £3,000.00. The property was formerly known as Clooney Road.
