Description
This is a late Georgian terrace of four small, two-story houses built around 1828. They were designed by Richard Suitor and likely constructed by James Turnball. The buildings are located on Main Street, Ballykelly, near the Presbyterian Church and Churchill. The terrace was originally part of a larger development that included eight brick houses and eight cottages, of which no remains survive. The total cost of the terrace, along with the other buildings, was approximately £3,000.
Architecturally, the houses are constructed of coursed sandstone blocks with ashlar facing the facade. The front elevation, built close to the footpath, features deep, recessed doorways with segmental heads, and segmental-headed windows divided into three sliding sash windows, the central window being wider than the side ones. Below the windows is a recessed panel in the stonework. Above, a row of square-headed sash windows creates a regular rhythm, and a projecting band of stonework defines the floor level and turns the corner onto the gable. Exposed rafters are visible at the eaves, featuring a moulded bargeboard that provides a positive stop. The ground floor segmental arches have well-executed voissoirs, and the plinth stone is chamfered along its top exposed edge. The roofs are covered with large Bangor blue slates, and the chimneys are of relatively recent red brick construction. The lower 900mm of the gables are built with rubble whinstone.
The rear of the houses has been significantly altered. One end house (number 22) now has a recent back return addition. Another has a wide, flat-roofed dormer window, while windows have been replaced on a third. The fourth is in the process of receiving a further back return. A wide back lane separates the terrace from its gardens. Each house contains an attic with a skylight, although only one retains the original cast iron skylight. Several windows have undergone inappropriate alterations.
