Former Thatched House, Duncrun Road, Lower Ballyleighery, Limavady, Co Londonderry

This was a large thatched cottage, likely built between 1780 and 1799. It stood on Duncrun Road, Lower Ballyleighery, near Limavady, County Londonderry. The cottage was a substantial three-bay direct entry dwelling, resembling a nearby property (HB02/09/046). It has since been demolished and replaced by a new two-storey house with a harled and whitewashed exterior. The replacement house features raised gables and a lean-to conservatory designed to mimic the appearance of the original thatched cottage, though the resemblance is incomplete. The original farmyard surrounding the cottage has been removed. A date stone inscribed “DB 1790” was found during demolition. Daniel Brewster, an ancestor of the Brewster family who live next door, lived in the area around 1790. While the Caldwell and Brewster families intermarried over time, local tradition associates "DB" with the adjacent cottage (HB02/09/046). The original cottage had fallen into ruin before its recent demolition. The building displayed vernacular architectural characteristics.
