Cottage, Duncrun Road, Magilligan, Limavady, Co Londonderry

This is a former cottage situated on the southern side of Duncrun Road, Magilligan, Lower Ballyleighery. It is said to have been built around the 1820s, and is shown on an 1831 map. Originally a picturesque thatched cottage with a fine view over Magilligan, it is now derelict and largely obscured by thicket and briars. The cottage was described by Girvan in 1967 as a “five bay, one storey rubble cottage, half thatched and half tiled”. A photograph in Girvan's book depicts a neat cottage with a low clipped hedge, a white-painted gate, and a porch with a flat roof and two circular windows, with double-sashed windows. The thatch has since collapsed, and slates from an adjoining room have largely been dislodged. A barn outbuilding, to the north east, presents a gable to the road with a window framed in a plaster architrave and has a tin roof, which is now in poor condition. The building was formerly used as a pub when owned by the Eatons, prior to the Second World War. Subsequent occupants included Jack Bolt and his wife, followed by Dan Summers, a carpenter, and his wife Rosanne, who lived there until the 1970s. The cottage lay empty before being purchased in 1980. Slates were stolen from the roof in the winter.
