Description
This is a late Georgian period cottage, likely constructed between 1820 and 1839, located on Duncrun Road, Magilligan, near Limavady in County Londonderry. It forms a group with associated outhouses situated both beside and across the road. The cottage is single-storey and built of basalt, with a natural slate roof and three brick chimneys featuring painted brick window heads on the roadside elevation. A further room appears to be attached to the main cottage, covered by a corrugated metal roof that extends over the outhouse. Under the eaves, two courses of brick headers are visible, serving as beam filling and exhibiting a slight corbelled fascia. The basalt walls, both front and rear, are butter pointed, particularly to the rear. Beneath the slate roof, the cottage likely contains two main units: a kitchen and a room which appears to be divided longitudinally into two spaces. The two rear windows of this room have lower cill levels, suggesting a lower floor level in one of the bedrooms; the single kitchen window to the rear is noticeably higher. The front windows are larger, with one featuring a fixed pane above a top-hung opening vent. A modern glazed-panel door replaces the original entrance. The cottage and adjacent outhouse are set back approximately three metres from the roadside and lack a formal hedge, although an overgrown hedge provides some screening for the bedroom window. Across the road, the outhouses are arranged in an L-shape, built of basalt with corrugated metal roofs, though a small section utilises natural slate. The building is shown on the 1831 Ordnance Survey Sheet and is currently in private ownership and in use as a house.
