17 Tircreven Road, Clooney, Magilligan, Limavady, Co Londonderry

This is a former thatched house, likely built between 1820 and 1839, situated in the townland of Clooney, near Magilligan, Limavady, County Londonderry. It was originally picturesquely positioned on flat ground at the foot of Binevenagh, offering a view for passing trains. The building is now a ruined wallstead, described as likely beyond realistic repair.

The wallstead comprises three rooms and is located close to the railway line on Tircreven Road. It features collapsed thatched roofing. The walls are harled and whitened, with four windows visible on the front elevation, currently boarded up but still present. A sheeted green door provides access. Three chimneys are present, one of which has collapsed. A small sash window with nine panes is located at the rear, beside the central fireplace. A shed with a tin roof aligns with the gable. A neat garden is enclosed by a hedge.

The building appears on an 1831 map and seems to have remained largely unchanged until relatively recently. It was noted in the 1993 Ulster Architectural Heritage Society’s buildings at risk catalogue, still thatched but with grasses growing from the roof. The roof’s collapse occurred in recent years. The building’s characteristics included vernacular design and the use of thatch. The property was delisted on June 25, 2002.
