Description
This is a mid-Victorian, 1½-storey rural residence built of handmade red brick with sandstone quoins and sandstone trim to the doors and windows. The house was constructed between 1860 and 1879, during the administration of Reverend Bernard McGurk, and cost £1,200 to build. The architect was likely John O’Neill, who was active in the diocese at the time. The structure features a sandstone plinth course and a dormer window. The roof is asbestos slated and presents a curious combination of gables, hip, and ½ hip sections; it originally had natural banded slates and ridge cresting. Polychrome brickwork forms an odd-shaped relieving arch above the windows.
The main entrance door has been moved one bay, its original location now a window, and is sheltered by a small lean-to roof. A single-storey brick extension with a ½ hip roof, trimmed with sandstone, has been added to the south. Two chimneys have been removed, and a window in the rear return has been blocked up. A Velux window has been inserted in the roof above the main entrance. Window replacements have changed the original timber sliding sashes with single horizontal astragal to uPVC top-hung styles. The property is set within an enclosed yard with an outhouse beyond the dwelling. Subsequent alterations and extensions have degraded the architectural quality to a point where listing would not be appropriate.
