Description
This is a substantial barn building, constructed between 1840 and 1859. It is significant as a former general store, originally linked to the adjacent building. The barn contributes to the character of the buildings around Bellarena Station, and possesses group value due to its association with other nearby structures.
The barn is a long, two-storey structure with a slated roof, constructed in coursed basalt with brick jambs and lintels framing most of the openings. It stands perpendicular to Seacoast Road near Bellarena Station, adjoining the former Post Office and Weigh Bridge, listed separately. The main axis runs northwest to southeast. A gable faces the road, featuring a wide, match-boarded garage door with a concrete lintel. Three low-level casement windows are located on the northeast side, and a single high-level casement window is at the southeast end of that elevation. A projecting dormer, formerly used for hoisting, is situated at the midpoint of the roof. A blockwork barn with a tin roof abuts the southeast gable. Four match-boarded timber doors are positioned on the southwest side, with a window aligned above each end door. The slate roofwork clearly demarcates the building into three distinct bays, each with sharply defined different colours.
The barn was originally part of a larger general store complex built by the Bellarena Estate, alongside the adjacent building. It was operated by Mr Leeke, a Member of Parliament for the area, until his family's bankruptcy 32 years ago. The original barn structure extended significantly further southeast than it does currently. The Allen family have owned the building since purchasing it from the Leekes, and they currently use it for farm purposes and general storage. The barn has notable characteristics and is of industrial archaeological interest.
