Description

This is a storey-and-a-half cottage built between 1840 and 1859 as part of the Bellarena Estate’s legacy, situated parallel to Seacoast Road at Bellarena Station and facing west. A single-storey wing extends to the south, with two further single-storey projections facing west. The main building features three chimneys, irregularly spaced, and high-level eight-pane sash windows within the gable walls under the roof. A single, modern four-pane window is set within a rendered wall. The southern gable is also rendered, while the rear has been rendered and contains three windows (one enlarged) and a door leading to the kitchen. To the north stands a barn (listed separately as HB02/09/009B).

The cottage originally comprised a general store, builders' supplier, and post office, built by the Bellarena Estate. The northern projection served as a weighbridge and the rendered wall was open. The post office and store, located within the southern wing, were operational until the 1970s. The building was formerly the residence of Mr. A Leeke, a local Member of Parliament, general merchant, and builder. The family experienced bankruptcy, and the current owners have resided in the house since 1997, having purchased it 32 years prior.

The property sits slightly back from the road, with a bitmac forecourt and a row of bollards installed along the road edge. While the building holds group value with the surrounding station buildings and its connection to a former MP, the alterations to the property detract from its original character.
