Description
Bellarena Station is a mid-Victorian railway station building designed by architect John Lanyon and built between 1873 and 1875. The larger of two stations in the Magilligan ward, it exemplifies competent mid-Victorian railway architecture, though its impact has been diminished by subsequent renovations to the adjoining former engine shed (number 306).
The building runs parallel to the railway line, presenting its north-westerly facing façade to overlook the tracks. It is a long, low structure that steps up through the use of two perpendicular gables that break the general roof line, creating a dynamic composition. The architecture is distinguished by polychrome brickwork in the Ruskinian style.
At the north-eastern end are toilets housed under the lowest roof section. The eaves are supported on three moulded timber purlins—one at the ridge and two at the eaves—a decorative motif that recurs elsewhere on the building. Access to the platform is provided from the road at this point.
On the platform side, the façade features two wide panelled doors serving stores and two sash windows; the doors and one window are topped with painted stone lintels. The first gable incorporates a rendered chimney at the junction with the lower roof and displays a high-level window above a blank lower section where the station name is rendered in tiles. Between the first and second gables sits the timber-framed ticket office, its eaves finished with a finely decorated fascia board and a timber bay window projecting beneath.
The second gable rises to two storeys. Its lower floor has two arched windows with brick hood mouldings, with two smaller similar windows above. A brick chimney with three pots rises from the ridge, aligning with the lower roofs.
The adjoining converted engine shed (number 306) now forms a two-storey building with rendered upper half sitting on a polychrome brick lower section that aligns with the ticket office.
On the south-western side, two small sash windows light the toilets, with a chimney at eaves level between them. The first gable features a small high-level opening above a projecting garage or former store topped with a semi-circular window. The second gable projects one bay from the main building line, with arched windows at ground and first-floor level on its side elevation.
The main façade toward the road incorporates one arched first-floor window and a porch with a ground-floor window (the windows of the former station master's house are modern replacements). Entry is from the side. A single-storey two-bay lean-to wing with similar windows is attached to the rear of the former engine shed.
The station operated until the 1960s, when it was sold by Northern Ireland Railways to a private owner approximately five to seven years before 1997. Northern Ireland Railways retained ownership of the platform, and trains have called at the station again since the early 1980s. The building is now in private residential use and is of industrial archaeological interest.
