Description

This is an early 19th-century ice house, an interesting example of brick dome construction and a building type representative of the requirements of a large country estate. The entrance is a pedestrian doorway with a simple horizontal arrangement of red hand-made brick, leading to a passageway and then to the main ice house chamber. This entrance is partly hidden by a grassy bank and a wall of random rubble basalt. Access to the entrance is from the roadway leading to a nearby barn. The ice house is assumed to have been constructed in the early 19th century. It is currently derelict.
