Description
East Gate Lodge, also known as Bellarena House, is a single-storey gate lodge built around 1920. It complements the entrance gates of the Bellarena Estate and suggests the architectural style of the main house. The lodge is significant for its continuing association with Bellarena House, the entrance gates, an associated gate screen, and pillars; the entire group possesses considerable group value.
The lodge features coursed basalt walls, a hipped slate roof, and a single chimney with three pots at the apex. It has two bay windows on the front elevation (facing south), flanking a centrally placed sheeted door. A third bay window faces east (perpendicular to Seacoast Road) near the front facade, and a fourth is located to the west, near the rear facade. A small extension to the rear matches the main building, creating an L-shaped plan. Windows include a sheeted door to the east, a 450 x 450mm four-pane sash window to the north and west, and a larger four-pane sash window to the original north wall, situated to the east of the extension.
The lodge is set back from Seacoast Road behind formal entrance gates to the Bellarena Estate. These gates are double, made of cast iron and electronically operated, and flanked by two square plan (800 x 800mm) coursed basalt pillars with ball-topped finials. Two pedestrian gates are positioned on either side of the main gates and linked by a basalt wall topped with cast iron railing. The wall curves outward to additional pillars along Seacoast Road. The lodge replaced two earlier lodges that were shown on a map from 1831. It was renovated in 1995 by Caroline Dickson Architects of Derry.
The listing includes the lodge, gates, railings, walls, and pillars.
