Bellarena Gate Lodge, 26 Scotstown Road, Bellarena, Limavady, Co Londonderry

This picturesque former gate lodge, situated at 26 Scotstown Road, Bellarena, Limavady, Co Londonderry, contributes to the architectural quality of the area. Built circa 1860 by Frederick Heygate, it originally served as a gate lodge for the Bellarena Estate and functioned as such until 15 years ago when the estate was sold off. The building is shown on the 1831 Ordnance Survey map, indicating its early presence.

The lodge is a storey and a half building constructed of basalt with granite window cills, and stands parallel to the road facing west. It is built in a picturesque cottage gothic style. The west-facing entrance has a porch with a steeply pitched roof supported on timber trellises arising from basalt arms with granite cills, reminiscent of porches at the former constabulary barracks (HB02/09/030) and a cottage near Bellarena station (HB02/09/010). A single window on the front has a double side-hung casement with diamond panes, alongside a secondary internal casement with clear glazing. A steeply pitched slate roof covers the building. To the sides, two similar windows are located at low level, with a further two windows at a higher level, featuring sliding sash and round-headed designs. A rear extension, rendered in appearance, has been added. This extension is positioned neatly behind the original building and does not significantly detract from its appearance, although it does not enhance it.

The former living room interior was once a double-height space with a staircase rising to a bedroom above the kitchen. The building was last delisted on 28 June 2002 and is currently a private house.
