Description
Townhead Cottages are a group of estate cottages located near Bellarena House on Scotchtown Road, Bellarena, Limavady, County Londonderry. Built around 1840, they were originally designed to create a picturesque effect through the simplicity and repetition of their facades, although this quality is now largely obscured.
The cottages are arranged in two blocks facing south along Scotchtown Road. The eastern block contains two cottages, both derelict; one has a large opening knocked into its facade, and both show signs of renovation work. The western block originally comprised three cottages, but the central one has been completely demolished. The most westerly cottage (number 3) has been extensively renovated, now featuring a white render and enlarged windows. The derelict cottages are constructed of basalt with red brick arches over the openings. The original windows were double-hung and divided into two frames by vertical glazing bars, as documented in Historic Buildings Records.
