Description

This is a simple, well-constructed, low segmental arch bridge carrying Glenedra Road across the Glenedra Water, also known as Crooked Burn. The bridge likely dates from between 1860 and 1879, replacing an earlier structure built around 1820 when the Glenedra Road itself was constructed as a "very useful new road" according to John McCloskey.

The bridge is a single arch, with a span of 6¼ metres. The arch is faced with large, well-shaped rectangular voissoirs, and the soffit is finished with daubed mortar. The bridge’s walls are constructed of random rubble stonework. Repairs appear to have been carried out on the downstream side, with rendering applied to square off the wall. The parapet wall is 18½ metres long on each side, returning at each end to form a straight buttress. The carriageway is 6½ metres wide, and the parapet is topped with large, well-formed hogsback sandstone coping stones. The bridge has a very low appearance due to the lack of supporting walls beneath the arch, making it appropriately suited to the wild landscape.

The Glenedra Road is straight and almost level at this crossing point, and the river turns nearly at right angles to pass underneath. The river banks on the upstream side are strengthened with random rubble walls. Downstream of the bridge, a picnic area is situated alongside the beginnings of Banagher forest. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest.
