Description
This is a small, rural stone bridge located in an upland area of the Sperrin mountains, along the Glenedra Road in the townland of Glenedra. The bridge, likely dating from the early 19th century (1800-1819), spans a small burn and has a semi-circular arch with roughly cut voissoirs. The arch vault is set on a marked skew to the roadway, meaning the parapet walls on either side of the carriageway are not directly aligned – the upstream parapet is 12.5 metres long, while the other is 15 metres. The parapets return to form buttresses; the coping is modern, constructed of insitu concrete.
The bridge walls are built of random rubble stonework, with a broad, battered buttress reinforcing the upstream (east) side. The underside of the arch vault is also built of random stonework, and the bed of the stream is layered with stone, with a drop on the downstream side. The roadway is on an incline, and so, too, are the parapets.
While the bridge’s construction may correlate with the early 19th-century road construction, the detail of the returned parapet walls is similar to that found at Glenedra Bridge (HB02/05/022), suggesting a possible later date. Its simple design and contribution to the moorland landscape give it industrial archaeological interest. Historic sources include an Ordnance Survey map from 1830, statistical reports from 1821 and Ordnance Survey memoirs from 1833-34.
